Bears vs. Panthers: Two Division Winners, One Weird Game

Somewhere a scheduling algorithm looked at Bears versus Panthers and had no idea it was staring at two division champions. That is the joke sitting inside this one. Nobody outside Chicago or Charlotte is treating this like a marquee matchup, and yet the résumés say it should be.

That disconnect is the whole story. A division title is supposed to mean something walks into the next season with weight behind it. Instead this game shows up looking like a Tuesday afternoon scrimmage that got mistakenly put on Sunday's slate. Two fan bases know exactly how strange that is, and neither team gets to hide from it.

So the game plays out however it plays out, but the premise alone is worth sitting with. Two teams that were good enough to win their division are now good enough to be an afterthought on the same weekend. Pick a side. Somebody has to walk out of this one still looking like a champion, even if nobody else was watching.
